Joshua 22
We pick up with the Eastern Tribes returning to their homes to the east of the Jordan River. They are commended by Joshua for staying the course and carrying out the mission the Lord gave them to help their brothers take the promised land. Trouble arises within the young nation as these eastern tribes construct an alter in view of the tribes in the promised land along the bank of the Jordan. This misunderstanding almost leads to war within the tribes but Phinehas with a contingent of 10 chief men discuss the situation with the eastern tribes first. It becomes apparent that while not guided by the Lord in doing so, the Eastern tribes were not looking to violate the Mosiac law but wanted a visual reminder for future generations that the tribes east of the Jordan are part of the nation as a whole and must not be prevented from worshipping at Shiloh. It serves as a lesson on the danger of jumping to conclusions and taking matters into your own hands without first consulting with the Lord.
