1 John 1:1

The letter of 1 John presents us with a powerful defense against spiritual deception and a profound assurance of eternal life. Written by an elderly apostle who witnessed Christ firsthand, this epistle cuts straight to the heart with remarkable clarity. John writes to combat early Gnostic heresies that denied either Christ's humanity or His deity, reminding us that the Word became flesh—something they heard, saw, and touched. The letter addresses three magnificent truths: God is light, God is love, and God is life. These aren't abstract concepts but lived realities that transform how we understand our salvation. John writes so that our joy may be full, so that we wouldn't sin (but if we do, we have an advocate), to protect us from deception, and most importantly, so that we may know—not hope or guess, but truly know—that we have eternal life. This assurance isn't arrogance; it's the confident rest that comes from trusting in Christ's finished work. We're challenged to examine whether we truly know our salvation is secure, not based on our performance but on Christ's advocacy. The repeated emphasis on 'knowing' throughout the letter (appearing 38 times) reveals God's desire for us to have certainty in our relationship with Him, freedom from fear of death, and confidence that when we close our eyes in this life, the next face we see will be Christ Himself.
