Ephesians 2:1-10

This powerful exploration of Ephesians 2:1-10 confronts us with a transformative truth: we weren't just broken or lost before Christ—we were spiritually dead. The passage breaks down into three profound movements that chart our spiritual journey. First, 'who we were' reveals our complete helplessness outside of Christ, walking according to worldly ways and under the influence of the enemy. We weren't on a path to self-improvement; we were utterly incapable of saving ourselves. Then comes the magnificent pivot: 'But God.' These two words change everything. While we were still enemies, dead in our sins, God intervened with rich mercy and great love. This demolishes the popular but unbiblical notion that 'God helps those who help themselves.' Instead, God helps those who are completely incapable of helping themselves. Finally, we discover our new reality: 'seated in heavenly places' with Christ. This isn't something we earn through good works—it's our position the moment we're saved. We must learn to sit before we can walk. Only when we rest in what Christ has already accomplished can we truly walk worthy of our calling. Our good works flow from our salvation; they don't produce it. We are God's workmanship, His creative masterpiece, prepared beforehand for the good works He's already planned for us.
