John 15:1-11

What does it truly mean to stay connected to the source of life itself? In John 15, verses 1 through 11, we are drawn into one of the most intimate and practical pictures of the Christian life found anywhere in Scripture. The image is simple but profound: a vine, its branches, and a vinedresser who tends the whole with careful, purposeful hands. Christ declares himself the true vine, his Father the vinedresser, and us the branches. The central lesson here is not complicated. A branch cut off from the vine does not simply struggle. It withers, dries out, and becomes good for nothing but burning. But a branch that stays connected does something remarkable. It bears fruit. Not just a little fruit, but good fruit, more fruit, and ultimately much fruit. There is a progression here that mirrors our own spiritual growth. We are not meant to remain spiritual toddlers, bumping into the same walls, stumbling over the same sins, speaking the same immature words year after year. Growth is expected. Growth is the natural result of staying connected. The word abide, repeated again and again throughout this passage, is not a complicated command. It simply means stay. Remain. Keep close. And the promise attached to that simple act is staggering. Joy that is full. Prayer that is answered. A life that glorifies the Father. The question this passage presses into our hearts is honest and direct. Are we truly abiding, or are we just visiting?
